In pursuit of its mandate to promote research-driven policy dialogue and conflict resolution, the combined Classes of Strategic Security Studies (SSS) and Peace and Conflict Studies (PCS) of Institute of Governance and Development Studies (IGDS), Nasarawa State University, Keffi, (NSUK) Nasarawa State recently undertook an Exploratory National Study Tour to Plateau State, North-Central Nigeria.

The team led by Professor Andrew Zamani, Director and Lead Facilitator of the Study Tour, Institute of Governance and Development Studies on-Behalf of the Vice Chancellor arrived Plateau seeking understanding of the dynamics, root causes, actors and human security implications of the protracted internal crises affecting communities across the state.
The engaging process that took about 5 days, our source learnt involved stakeholders’ engagements, town hall discussions, community assessments and interface with state and non-state actors, including youth and pressure groups.
Referencing a communique issued at the end of the exercise, the team is said to have prescribed institutional reforms and security accountability from both the Federal and State governments. This they said could be achieved through transparent investigations, impartial prosecution of perpetrators, strengthening security sector accountability through oversight, community liaison and intelligence-led operations.

Other recommendations were peace building and reconciliation, the launch of a Plateau State Peace and Reconciliation Commission to mediate between communities to restore trust, Integration of traditional and religious leaders into conflict mediation as well as early warning systems.
The students noted that restitution and rehabilitation of affected communities, immediate provision of relief materials, psycho-social support, and reconstruction assistance for displaced persons would also go a long way.
Speaking to news en in Makurdi at the end of the exercise, Federal Commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission in Benue State, James Oche said it was an engaging and unforgettable experience that shaped his journey to academic excellence and said Nasarawa State University Keffi was championing the cause of unequalled academic excellence.
