Chief Operating Officer of Data-Lead Africa (DLA), Ms. Ojone Akor, has called on the government to increase investment in technology training to empower young Nigerians and bridge the digital skills gap in the country.

In a statement e-signed by Felicia Ayodele, Head of Corporate Communications at Data-Lead Africa, Akor made this passionate appeal during the graduation ceremony for Cohort 15 of the Data Analytics Bootcamp. The event was held on January 17, 2025, at the organization’s headquarters in Abuja.

Akor emphasized the critical role of technology in driving economic growth and reducing unemployment.

“We live in a world that is rapidly evolving, driven by data and technology. If we are to prepare the next generation for the challenges and opportunities of the future, we must prioritize tech training and ensure it is accessible to all, especially underserved populations.”

She noted that the Data Analytics Bootcamp is a flagship program of Data-Lead Africa, designed to equip participants with in-demand skills in data analytics, visualization, and insights generation.

Cohort 15 graduates showcased their capstone projects, tackling real-world challenges using tools like Power BI, Excel, and NVivo. Many graduates shared transformative stories of how the program has empowered them to navigate the job market and contribute meaningfully to their organizations and communities.

Drawing from her experience at a recent job fair organized by GIZ in Abuja, Akor highlighted the growing demand for tech talent and the gaps in specialized skills.

“During the job fair, it was evident that while many young people are eager to learn and work in data analytics, there is still a significant knowledge gap in specialized tools and areas. This highlights the need for targeted training programs that not only address the basics but also focus on niche skills that set individuals apart in the competitive job market,” she explained.

The graduation ceremony was attended by industry stakeholders, alumni, and representatives from government and private sector organizations.

Akor urged the government and private sector to collaborate on scaling initiatives like the Data Analytics Bootcamp.

“The future of work is tech-driven, and if we are serious about empowering our youth, we must invest in the skills that matter most. Together, we can create a workforce that is not just employable but globally competitive,” she said.

Data-Lead Africa reiterated its commitment to providing high-quality training and fostering partnerships that drive innovation and digital transformation across the continent.
