The Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, has restated its commitment to gender inclusive programmes and the entrepreneurial advancement of women in the Niger Delta, as it marks the 2026 International Women’s Day across the nine states of the region.
Speaking at the International Women’s Day programme in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, the NDDC Director of Culture and Women Affairs, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, highlighted the role of women in shaping families, driving community development, and contributing to national progress.
 In a statement issued by Seledi Thompson-Wakama, Director, Corporate Affairs, it was noted that she remarked that this year’s celebration, with the theme: “Rights, Justice, Action for All Women and Girls,” was organised in commemoration of International Women’s Day and showcased the NDDC’s continued dedication to inclusive development and the economic inclusion and advancement of women in society.
Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to promoting gender inclusion and creating opportunities that enable women to thrive socially and economically, she said:
“Women are central to everything we do at the NDDC, and that is why we celebrate you every year. Your contributions to peace-building, regional development, and nationhood are enormous, and we remain committed to supporting and empowering you.

“With the commemoration of this day, we are asking for equal opportunities at the table for women. When a woman is empowered, there is transfer of both wealth and knowledge to her immediate community. Culture thrives when women thrive, women should be supported. This year, let us transit to action. It is not enough to attend these programmes, let us put the outcome to use.”
The event featured several Small and Medium Enterprise enhancement sessions from different agencies in the region.
A key facilitator, Secretary of Niger Delta Chambers of Commerce, NDCC, Chief Solomon Edebiri spoke on “Strengthening Local Enterprises for Global Trade Opportunities.” He highlighted the importance of sustainability in business by controlling operating costs, maintaining ethical business practices, and developing future business leaders.
Another facilitator from the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC, Mrs. Sylvia Adeneye, addressed “Non-Oil Export Opportunities and Export Readiness”. She encouraged women to tap into the plethora of export opportunities afforded them through the NEPC. She highlighted international exhibits as one of the benefits of being a registered exporter.
In his remarks, the lead consultant of Healing Arms Foundation, Omusuo Dieworio, appreciated the NDDC and its management for its well-thought-out gender-inclusive programmes.
Participants across the region expressed gratitude for the initiative. One of them, Mrs. Ebiere Abe, said, “This programme has renewed our confidence and strengthened our resolve to achieve more. We appreciate the NDDC for recognising the contributions of women and for creating a platform that empowers and amplifies our voices. We are returning to our businesses better equipped and determined to expand our ventures.”
