The National Coalition Against Terrorism has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately sack or redeploy the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, citing growing concerns over Nigeria’s security situation and a recent assessment report by a United States Congresswoman, Kimberly Daniels.

Speaking at a press conference held on Friday at Top Rank Hotel in Garki, Abuja, the National Coordinator of the coalition, Marvin Ibe, Esq., said the group fully endorses the findings and recommendations of the U.S. lawmaker, who has been vocal in advocating against religious extremism in Africa.

According to Ibe, the report—forwarded to the United States Secretary of State—raises critical concerns about Nigeria’s defence leadership and recommends urgent changes to restore confidence in the country’s fight against terrorism.

“The security situation in Nigeria has drawn global attention, and this report provides a unique perspective that must not be ignored,” Ibe said. “We align completely with the position of Congresswoman Kimberly Daniels and call for the immediate sack or redeployment of Bello Matawalle.”

The coalition also referenced allegations surrounding Matawalle’s past interactions with bandits during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State, noting that such claims have further eroded public trust in his ability to manage national defence responsibilities.

“It is widely believed that Nigerians no longer have confidence in the Minister due to alleged past relationships with bandits and a perceived lack of requisite experience,” Ibe stated.

He emphasized that national security demands absolute trust and transparency, warning that any suspicion of compromise within the defence leadership could have grave consequences for both military personnel and civilians.

Quoting Daniels’ position, the coalition noted that “the greatest form of terrorism is the homegrown enemy,” stressing that insider threats pose a significant danger to national stability.

The group further argued that the United States’ involvement signals the seriousness of the situation, adding that intelligence sharing from international partners could play a pivotal role in reshaping Nigeria’s security architecture.

“We understand that when America speaks, it often follows with action. Their engagement and intelligence support can help strengthen our fight against terrorism,” Ibe added.

The coalition also criticized what it described as attempts by certain individuals to politicize the issue, particularly narratives that place sole responsibility for national security on the President without acknowledging the roles of appointed officials.

While reaffirming support for President Tinubu, the group urged him to act swiftly and decisively.

“Mr. President must rise to the occasion and take urgent steps before it is too late. Redeploying the Minister should be the minimum action required to rebuild confidence among Nigerians and the international community,” the statement read.

In addition, the coalition called for intensified efforts to track and prosecute financiers of terrorism, noting that cutting off funding channels is critical to ending insurgency and violence across the country.

The press conference concluded with a strong appeal for unity and decisive leadership, as the coalition warned that Nigeria risks being overwhelmed by internal threats if urgent measures are not taken.
