Residents of Apa-Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State were thrown into panic and heightened tension following the alleged killing of an Agila man by an individuals suspected to be Ezza , in an incident that threatened to ignite communal unrest between Apa-Agila and its Ezza residents.
The tragic discovery of the victim’s lifeless body, lying in a pool of blood in a bush on the outskirts of the community, sent shockwaves across Apa-Agila and neighboring settlements. Eyewitnesses described a chilling scene, as youth search team from the community reportedly stumbled upon the corpse, triggering fear, outrage, and uncertainty.
The development quickly escalated anxiety among residents, particularly amid concerns of a possible retaliatory attack by Apa-Agila youths against members of the Ezza community, to which the alleged assailant is believed to belong. Many locals reportedly fled their homes temporarily, while others shut down the businesses as rumors of impending violence spread.
Community sources revealed that the fragile peace between the two groups was at risk, as tensions mounted and suspicion deepened. “People were gripped with fear. There was apprehension everywhere, especially among the Ezza community who feared reprisals,” a resident said.
However, calm was restored following the swift intervention of the Ado Local Government Chairman, Engr. Sunny Oche, who immediately mobilized security personnel to the affected areas. His rapid response is widely credited with preventing a breakdown of law and order.
Security operatives at the chairman’s instruction were swiftly deployed to strategic locations within Apa-Agila and adjoining communities, providing reassurance to residents and deterring any form of reprisal attacks. The visible presence of security forces helped to de-escalate tensions and restore a sense of normalcy.
In a further move to address the root causes of the crisis and forestall future occurrences, Engr. Oche has initiated the constitution of a peace committee tasked with facilitating dialogue, ensuring justice, and promoting sustained peaceful coexistence in the areas.
Stakeholders across the divide have commended the council chairman’s proactive approach, describing the initiative as timely and crucial in preserving unity in the area. Community leaders noted that the peace committee would serve as a platform for conflict resolution and mutual understanding.
“This is a step in the right direction. Justice must be served, but peace must also prevail,” a local leader remarked.
As investigations into the killing continue, residents are calling for thorough and transparent handling of the case to ensure accountability and prevent further escalation.
Pan Afric Reporters learnt that the prime suspect whose details is not disclosed as at the time of filing this report has been arrested by the police while investigation is ongoing to arrest other culprits with the assurance of dispensing justice within the next possible time.
Pan Afric Reporters also learnt that leaders and stakeholders from the victim’s community has called on the youth to remain calm and desist from any form of reprisal, assured them of justice from constituted authority.
While calm has gradually returned to Apa-Agila, the incident underscores the delicate balance of inter-communal relations in the area and the importance of swift leadership response in times of crisis.
