NDDC Mourns Bayelsa Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Shelves Project Commissioning

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Ph.D., describing his passing as a profound loss to the state and the nation.

In a condolence message issued on Monday, December 15, 2025, the Board, Management, and Staff of the Commission extended their heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of Bayelsa State, as well as the family of the late Deputy Governor.

As a mark of respect, the NDDC announced the suspension of the commissioning of its projects in Bayelsa State, which had been scheduled for December 16, 2025.

The Commission paid glowing tribute to Senator Ewhrudjakpo, describing him as a man of candour, unwavering commitment, and exceptional dedication to public service. According to the NDDC, these qualities earned him a reputation as a tireless and workaholic Deputy Governor.

The statement highlighted his impactful service as Commissioner for Works in Bayelsa State, where he played a key role in driving infrastructural development, as well as his tenure as Senator representing Bayelsa West in the 9th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In all capacities, the Commission noted, Senator Ewhrudjakpo demonstrated competence, vision, and a strong passion for the development of his people.

“He served Bayelsa State and Nigeria with remarkable humility, sincerity, and patriotism, embodying integrity and simplicity in leadership,” the statement read.

The NDDC further described the late Deputy Governor’s life as one defined by service, sacrifice, and commitment to the common good, noting that his legacy of principled leadership and selfless service would continue to inspire future generations.

The Commission prayed for God’s comfort and strength for all those mourning the loss and for the eternal repose of Senator Ewhrudjakpo’s soul.

The condolence message was jointly signed by the Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, and the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Chief Samuel Ogbuku, Ph.D.
