In a bid to enforce stricter recruitment standards in government agencies, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, Senator (Chief) Allwell Onyesoh, DSSRS, JP, FIBAKM (Rivers East), met with the leadership of the National Universities Commission (NUC) earlier today.
The meeting, attended by NUC Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Ribadu, and his Director, Mr. Jibril Momoh, focused on reviewing the commission’s workforce, nominal roll, and previous recruitment processes.
Senator Onyesoh raised concerns over disparities in the NUC’s nominal roll, noting that some states had a disproportionately higher number of employees than others. He urged the commission to address these irregularities in future recruitment exercises to ensure fairness and compliance with the Federal Character principle enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Although the NUC disclosed that its last recruitment exercise took place in 2016, Senator Onyesoh emphasized the urgent need to expedite the hiring process. He encouraged the commission to recruit qualified Nigerians, particularly in light of the increasing number of universities under its supervision.
Senator Onyesoh remains committed to tackling recruitment challenges in government agencies and parastatal, ensuring that employment practices align with equity, transparency, and Federal Character Principles.
