As countries around the world marked World Health Day 2026, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary and Tertiary), Ipalibo Harry Banigo, has reiterated her commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and equitable healthcare system in Nigeria.

In a statement released to commemorate the global health observance, Senator Banigo emphasized the importance of this year’s theme, “Together for Health: Stand with Science,” stressing the urgent need to prioritize maternal and newborn healthcare as a critical component of Nigeria’s development agenda.

She noted that access to quality healthcare should not be seen as a privilege but as a fundamental right for every citizen.

“Quality healthcare is not a privilege for a few, but a fundamental right for all. Every Nigerian deserves access to competent, compassionate, and continuous care,” she stated.

Drawing from her experience as both a medical professional and a lawmaker, Banigo highlighted her ongoing legislative efforts aimed at reforming the nation’s healthcare sector. She reaffirmed her dedication to improving healthcare delivery at the secondary and tertiary levels, increasing investments in health infrastructure, and strengthening workforce training and retention, particularly in underserved areas.

The senator also called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders, urging development partners, civil society organizations, traditional institutions, and healthcare professionals to work together in addressing persistent gaps within the health system.

She aligned her advocacy with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 3, which focuses on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.

Banigo further reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to advancing universal health coverage, strengthening emergency response systems, and ensuring sustainable financing for health programmes across the country.

Reflecting on both the progress made and existing challenges, she called on all stakeholders to renew their commitment to improving healthcare outcomes in Nigeria.
