The Coalition for Good Governance and Transparency in Nigeria has accused the Chief Judge of Benue State, Hon. Justice Maurice Ikpambese, of bias, political compromise, and sabotaging democracy. During a world press conference held today, in Abuja the group’s Chief Convener, Comrade Okpanachi Jacob, called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate Justice Ikpambese and take appropriate disciplinary action within 48 hours or face mass protests.
According to the coalition, the Benue State House of Assembly had passed a resolution recommending Justice Ikpambese’s removal over alleged misconduct and abuse of office, citing Section 292 (3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended. However, the NJC has allegedly ignored multiple petitions against him, some dating back to 2010, raising concerns about judicial integrity in the state.
The group further alleged that Justice Ikpambese had interfered with the local government election petition tribunal by showing favoritism to certain petitioners. They described his actions as a “miscarriage of justice” and claimed that the judiciary in Benue State had collapsed under his leadership.

The coalition urged Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Benue State House of Assembly to resist external political interference and proceed with the appointment of an Acting Chief Judge. They also called on the Attorney General of the Federation to uphold constitutional provisions by supporting the state government’s authority in the matter.
Additionally, the group accused Justice Ikpambese of making statements suggesting he had personally selected judges who would be difficult for the governor to challenge, further questioning his neutrality.
“If the NJC fails to act within 48 hours, we will occupy its premises in protest to defend democracy and restore judicial credibility in Benue State,” Comrade Jacob warned.
The NJC is yet to respond to these allegations.
